IF it will boot into safe mode - but NOT "boot into his regular account" - what that suggests to me is this: Just to reiterate the instructions for Safe Mode and Recovery mode, on the off chance youre doing them wrong: Safe Mode is achieved by booting with the Shift key held down for a very long time, until you reach the login screen that says 'Safe Mode' in red letters, then you log into one of your accounts (or the guest account) to see if that works. Are you sure that you're actually booting into "safe mode" (this should "get you to the finder") and NOT into recovery mode (which gets you to the installer, disk utility, etc.)?
